Civilizations, arts, sciences and feats of engineering that reached the first rank of human attainment — and that present-day attention, schooling and media have left behind.

Baseline first, gap second. Admission requires a Significance score of at least 7.0/10 on four fixed factors: (1) world firsts and independent inventions; (2) superlatives of scale (largest, oldest, longest of kind); (3) influence and continuity, including systems still working today; (4) technical difficulty, especially feats unreplicated for centuries. Only entries above this baseline are then ordered by the Neglect gap = Significance − Recognition (each /10). The gap directs attention within the list; it never admits an entry — obscurity alone does not qualify. Scores are editorial estimates on this fixed rubric; every entry links to its Wikipedia article for the underlying record.
